In May 2017 we will be offering our fantastic photo-safari in Morocco led by adventurous travel photographer Toby Savage. Photographic opportunities will abound as we travel by 4×4 from the vibrance of the city to mountain villages and desert wilderness. During the week we will visit the souks of Marrakech, the spectacular Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, set of many Hollywood films, sleep in a nomad tent and take a camel ride across the dunes. Under Toby’s expert guidance we will learn about the elements of a good photograph and hone our skills immersed in spectacular scenery.
Morocco is a diverse and extraordinary country – such a wide range of desert landscape, mountains, palaces, villages and souks is a feast for any lens! To do justice to this remarkable place we have planned an exciting journey across the southern region to give us a taste of all these aspects. We will travel in 4×4 vehicles, with experienced and knowledgeable guides.
Saturday 6 May
Late afternoon: Arrival
Participants will be met at Marrakech airport and transferred to our hotel. Toby will lead an introductory presentation before dinner.
Sunday 7 May
A trip to Morocco would not be complete without a visit to the souks of Marrakech. We will head into the Medina for the morning, led by an experienced local guide. After lunch, we will have free time in the city before returning to the hotel to review and discuss our images.
Monday 8 May
An early start takes us up into the Atlas mountains. After exploring Telouet Kasbah, we reach the impressive Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, UNESCO World Heritage site made famous by many Hollywood films. We continue to Ourazazate, to the beautiful Fint oasis where we spend the night.
Tuesday 9 May
After breakfast we set off on the ancient caravan road between the river and the mountains, past villages and gardens along the oases. We stop for lunch at M’hamid, the gateway to the desert, and take a camel ride to the dunes of Erg Lihoudi. We venture further into the Sahara desert for sunset at the beautiful Erg Chagaga dunes accessible only by four wheel drive. We spend the night in a bivouac of nomad tents under the stars.
Wednesday 10 May
After breakfast we continue our safari across the Sahara over the stony desert and the now dried-up Lake Iriqui. From the edge of the desert at Foum Zguid, we travel north to Taznakht, famous for its Berber gelims and carpets, where we stop for lunch. After crossing the Tizi-n-Ikhsane and Tizi-n-Tighatine passes, we reach Taliouine, the heart of the saffron growing region. Our journey takes us on to Taroudant, where we stay overnight in a riad.
Thursday 11 May
We wake up to the sounds and smells of Taroudant, known as “the little Marrakesh”, celebrated for its ramparts and medina. From here we travel along the argane groves of the Souss river valley to Agadir, then up the coast along the Paradise Valley. Traversing through the mountains, we reach our night’s destination, the vibrant town of Essaouira with its medina, many shops and fish restaurants.
Friday 12 May
After exploring Essaouira in the morning, we travel through a forest of argane trees to return to our hotel in Marrakech. We pass many Berber villages on the way. On our last evening we will have the opportunity to relive and discuss our experiences over dinner in one of Marrakech’s many excellent restaurants.
Saturday 13 May
Transfer to Marrakech airport.

In order to see the very best of this exciting country, this trip does involve some travelling. However, time will be allocated for group tuition and there will always be opportunities for participants to have 1-1 feedback with Toby on any aspect of their work. Participants will receive guidance in aspects of street photography, architecture, landscape and portraits. On evenings where time allows, participants will share their images for discussion with the rest of the group.
Accomodation will be in small comfortable hotels and riads; for the night in the desert we will be in a bivouac of nomad tents. Although on a room-share basis of two people, single occupancy is available for a small supplement, please enquire for details. Double rooms are also available for couples. If you are coming with a friend, or wish to share a room with anyone in particular, please let us know.
