We are delighted to be holding our fifth Classical and Jazz Guitar Course at the wonderful four-star Palazzo Loup, set in the beautiful Emilia-Romagna countryside just outside the charming town of Loiano. Set in secluded grounds with glorious views across the valley, the Palazzo is the ideal setting for a great week of music-making, relaxation and discovering the best that this fantastic region has to offer. A healthy combination of creativity, delicious food and wine and an active social schedule will guarantee a memorable holiday.
This course is aimed at classical and jazz guitarists (from the enthusiastic amateur to the professional) and offers immersive tuition in repertoire (solo and ensemble), guitar technique, theory, sight-reading, arranging and ensemble skills, culminating in a final performance in a local venue. The course will take the format of small group teaching, one-to-one sessions, masterclasses and ensemble coaching. Each student will receive a tailored programme to match their individual requirements and needs.
Under the guidance of eminent tutors Bridget Mermikides (classical guitar) and Milton Mermikides (jazz guitar), the course will allow participants to refine their technique, learn new repertoire and gain confidence. At least 3 years’ minimum experience is recommended, but enthusiasm counts! If you are unsure about your level of experience, please get in touch.
Daily sessions will include:
- Technical development and warm-up routines
- Individual lessons on student repertoire
- Group sessions on the art of effective practice
- Ensemble coaching in preparation for the end of week concert
Repertoire for the course will include baroque, classical, romantic and Latin styles.
The jazz guitar course will cover aspects of the following:
- Fretboard harmony
- Chord theory
- Improvising over chord progressions/chord melody playing
- Jazz and bossa rhythm styles
- Walking bass and chords
- Technical development including picking and finger style
Repertoire will comprise standard jazz tunes including blues, rhythm changes, bebop and Latin.
Workshop sessions and individual lessons will take place in the mornings and early afternoons, leaving the rest of the day for planned excursions or time out.
As well as providing a rewarding musical experience, we aim to give participants the opportunity to enjoy a truly memorable holiday. A typical day will include a morning rehearsal followed by a buffet lunch, after which there will be small group or individual lessons. Afternoon excursions usually depart at around 3pm and return in time for dinner, with the exception of the excursion to Bologna which will return at around 10pm.
On the penultimate evening there is a barbecue with informal performances by participants (optional!) and our final concert is held in a local venue on the last evening.
Emilia-Romagna is famous for its beautiful countryside, fast cars, rolling vineyards and is the gastronomic heart of Italy. During the week, excursions are planned alongside the musical schedule; we have selected some highlights which we hope will give a taste of the history and culture of this great region.
- An afternoon and evening to discover the beautiful city of Bologna
- Visit to the medieval village of Dozza, one of the 100 “Borghi più belli d’Italia”
- Tour and tasting in a top-class vineyard
- Opportunity for a night visit to the astronomical observatory of Loiano (weather permitting)
All of the above excursions are included in the price of the course.
